What is a Christian?
Maybe you’ve heard the word before. Maybe you even call yourself a “Christian.” But what does it actually mean?
Some people think Christianity is merely yet another religion among thousands. Others think it refers to people who go to church regularly. Still more think it’s sort of a hereditary thing.
However, the first reference to the word Christian is Acts 11:26c. “The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.” Christians, or disciples, are “Christ-followers” who believe that Jesus Christ is indeed Who He said He was.
Christ said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man comes to the Father but by me.” ~ John 14:6
A Christian is someone who has experienced God’s unconditional love through His Son, Jesus Christ. We acknowledge that we are sinners and that our sin separates us from a holy God. We know that we need a Savior to save us from our sins – we can’t do anything to earn salvation; it is God’s free gift to all Who believe in His Son. Jesus, God’s only Son, came to earth as a man to live a perfect life. He died on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins, rose again on the third day authenticating His claims as deity, and now lives with His Father in Heaven, interceding on behalf of His children. In Christ, there is no condemnation for our sins, only forgiveness. All that’s left is to live a life overflowing with gratitude for a holy, benevolent God. That’s the Gospel, the Good News of salvation!
